Review: Seven Year Switch by Claire Cook (posting 1 of 2)

Seven Year Switch by Claire Cook
Published by Hyperion
ISBN 978-1-4013-4116-9
At the request of Pump Up Your Book, a HC was sent, at no cost to me, for my honest opinion.
Synopsis (book's jacket): Just when Jill Murray has finally figured out how to manage on her own, her ex-husband proves that he can't even run away reliably. After seven long years missing in action, he's back-crashing into the man-free existence Jill and her ten-year-old daughter have built so carefully. What's a good mother to do? To a child, even a deadbeat dad is better than no dad at all.
Jill's life just hasn't turned out quite the way she planned. By now, she'd hoped to be jetting around the world as a high-end cultural coach. Instead, she's answering phones for a local travel agency and teaching cooking classes at the community center.
Enter free-spirited entrepreneur Billy, who hires Jill as a consultant for an upcoming business trip. Is their relationship veering off in a new direction? And what about her ex? Jill couldn't possibly still have feelings for him....could she? Suddenly, her no-boys allowed life is anything but.
The say that every seven years you become a completely new person, but Jill isn't sure she is ready for the big change. It takes a Costa Rican getaway to help her make a choice-not so much between the two men in her life, but between the woman she is and the one she wants to be.
My Thoughts and Opinion:  Hurry!! You still have time to read this delightful, female self liberating, fun, maybe even a little envy thrown in summer read. Jill, has been surviving and going through the motions of daily life to stay afloat to make a life for her daughter and herself after being abandoned seven years ago by her husband. But she hasn't moved on since that time. The characters in this book come alive through Ms. Cooks writing. I found myself laughing along with Jill, the main character, feeling sorry for her and, at the same time, rooting her on. It was very easy to form imagery of the settings by the words the author conveyed. I might add that one scene, involving a tarantula, had me looking around and I don't even live where tarantulas do, but was not taking any chances. I also enjoyed the little tidbits of knowledge that the author also added about different lands, the unique foods and customs of different cultures. And for the jealousy, I now believe that every woman needs to and should take a GGG, Great Girlfriends Getaway. This was the first book I read by Claire Cook and it won't be my last. I thoroughly enjoyed it, as have so many others, from reading the many great reviews regarding this book.
Claire Cook visited this blog and was a "Guest Author" in July. Check out that posting.

Hosted by Danielle at There's A Book
From her blog:
We all leave our “footprint” on the world, in one way or another. We each, individually, do something or are someone that makes the world a little better just by being here. I created this weekly meme to get to know the blogging community I love just a bit better. To know what makes them tick, outside of books, that is. Each week I will post a question to be answered in the following week’s “A Bit of Me(Me)”. Check back each Saturday to get the info for next week’s post and link up with your current post right here.
This Weeks Question: If you could travel anywhere in the world for 24 hours, where would you go?
(Logistically, this could be more than one place, so be creative!)

I have been lucky to have traveled to some faraway places.  When in high school (many, many) years ago, I traveled to Europe twice.  My first trip was to Spain and then we took a boat to Africa. Of course, while in Spain, we saw a bull fight, which parts of it were not pleasant to watch.  Africa, the country side was beautiful but then we took a side trip to the Casba and that left a lasting impression on me.  The poverty, the lack of housing and illness, mainly leprosy.
The next year, I traveled to Italy, which was beautiful and rich in heritage.  I went to the Vatican, the Coliseum, Pompeii, shopping in Florence and so much more.
We have also been to the Caribbean 4 times.

So to answer this week's question, I would love to go back to Italy and visit but as a family vacation with our 2 sons.

But my favorite place to visit, we have been twice and we are hoping to go back after I recuperate fully, is Aruba.  The white sandy beaches, the turquoise waters, the tropical breeze, and the ideal place to relax and read.   We stay at the Aruba Radisson, which is a resort that one doesn't even have to leave because everything is right on the grounds.  For us, this is the perfect vacation, a little bit of heaven on earth.

Now you know a little bit more about me.  What about you?  Where would you love to be or travel to?

Guest Author James Hayman (posting 1 of 3)

Today I am thrilled that James Hayman is stopping by, his 2nd visit here, to talk about his latest novel. The last time he was here, was for his book, The Cutting, (review 03/30/10) which I thoroughly enjoyed. Today he will be telling us about his newest novel The Chill of Night. Lets give a group welcome to Mr. James Hayman.

About James Hayman
Like McCabe, I’m a native New Yorker. He was born in the Bronx. I was born in Brooklyn. We both grew up in the city. He dropped out of NYU Film School and joined the NYPD, rising through the ranks to become the top homicide cop at the Midtown North Precinct. I graduated from Brown and joined a major New York ad agency, rising through the ranks to become creative director on accounts like the US Army, Procter & Gamble, and Lincoln/Mercury.
We both married beautiful brunettes. McCabe’s wife, Sandy dumped him to marry a rich investment banker who had “no interest in raising other people’s children.” My wife, Jeanne, though often given good reason to leave me in the lurch, has stuck it out through thick and thin and is still my wife. She is also my best friend, my most attentive reader and a perceptive critic.
Both McCabe and I eventually left New York for Portland, Maine. I arrived in August 2001, shortly before the 9/11 attacks, in search of the right place to begin a new career as a fiction writer. He came to town a year later, to escape a dark secret in his past and to find a safe place to raise his teenage daughter, Casey.
There are other similarities between us. We both love good Scotch whiskey, old movie trivia and the New York Giants. And we both live with and love women who are talented artists.
There are also quite a few differences. McCabe’s a lot braver than me. He’s a better shot. He likes boxing. He doesn’t throw up at autopsies. And he’s far more likely to take risks. McCabe’s favorite Portland bar, Tallulah’s, is, sadly, a figment of my imagination. My favorite Portland bars are all very real.

About The Chill of Night
Lainie Goff thought she had it all. The ambitious young attorney was brilliant, beautiful, and on a fast-track to a lucrative partnership at one of the top firms in New England. But then, one cold night, a dark and ugly secret comes back from Lainie’s past and she pushes things too far. Soon her body is found, frozen solid in sub-zero temperatures at the end of the Portland Fish Pier.
A mentally ill woman named Abby Quinn witnesses the brutal crime. But when she tells what she has seen, nobody will believe her. Not until she too mysteriously disappears.
In The Chill of Night, Portland homicide detective Michael McCabe finds himself finds himself fighting memories from his own past as he races to find the killer before another life is lost.
James Hayman once again tells a gripping tale of evil and deceit and creates characters so real and so human, we want to meet them again and again.
Read the Excerpt!
Abby looked up and saw a low dark thing moving toward her. A black form, now visible through the whipping snow, now obliterated by it. With each step it grew clearer and bigger. At twenty feet it began to take shape. Animal. Not human. A large dog, gray fur glistening under crystals of snow, cruel icy eyes shining through the night, more wolf than dog. She stopped but the animal kept coming. She could hear its rumbling growl. Low. Menacing. Commanding. Her heart beat against the walls of her chest so hard she was certain it would break through. She knew what the creature wanted. She knelt on her hands and knees. It bared a fang long enough and sharp enough to penetrate the soft flesh at back of her neck. She lowered her head and waited for release. But release didn’t come. Finally, after a minute or two, she looked up and it was gone. She could see nothing in front of her but the snow-covered street and the wind-swept flakes still hurtling down through the night sky. She stayed where she was, kneeling in the snow. She could hear a child crying. She listened. After a bit she realized the sound was coming from her. She got up and started walking again.

So, grab the logo, post about the Hop on your blog, and start HOPPING through the list of blogs that are posted in the Linky list below!!

Your blog should have content related to books, including, but not limited to book reviews.
If you start following someone through the Hop, leave a comment on their blog to let them know! Stop back during the week to see other blogs that are added! And, most importantly, the idea is to HAVE FUN!!
This week's twist:
How many books do you have on your 'to be read shelf’?
My Answer:
Shelf?  More like a bookcase.  I have 22 books in my "tbr requested review" pile and for my "personal tbr shelves" it is too many.  And then there are quite a few in my EReader waiting to be read.  Since finding the book blogging/reviewing world my tbr lists have grown.  And because of that I have renamed my tbr list to "my tbr bucket list".
Have a great weekend and thank you for stopping by and visiting!!

Giveaway AH-CHOO by Jennifer Ackerman

AH-CHOO
Photobucket
by Jennifer Ackerman

August 12th to August 19th

About the book:
What do you know about the common cold? Probably a lot less than you think.
Some colds are like mice, timid and annoying; others like dragons, accompanied by body aches and deep misery. In AH-CHOO!, Jennifer Ackerman explains what, exactly, a cold is, how it works, and whether it's really possible to "fight one off." Scientists call this the Golden Age of the Common Cold because Americans suffer up to a billion colds each year, resulting in 40 million days of missed work and school and 100 million doctor visits. They've also learned over the past decade much more about what cold viruses are, what they do to the human body, and how symptoms can be addressed. In this ode to the odious cold, Ackerman sifts through the chatter about treatments-what works, what doesn't, and what can't hurt. She dispels myths, such as susceptibility to colds reflects a weakened immune system. And she tracks current research, including work at the University of Virginia at Charlottesville, a world-renowned center of cold research studies, where the search for a cure continues.

Today's Topic:
Have your reading choices changed over the years? Or pretty much stayed the same? (And yes, from childhood to adulthood we usually read different things, but some people stick to basically the same kind of book their entire lives, so…)
My Response:
For me, the choices have pretty much stayed the same.  In elementary school I remember that I always had a book but as far as the genre, I don't remember.  However, middle and high school, I remember that my personal reading choices were the same as they are today.  I have always enjoyed the genres of suspense/mystery and also contemporary romance and literature.

Musing Mondays (1 of 3)

MONDAY
Photobucket

Photobucket

Hosted by Miz B at Should Be Reading
Miz B is shaking up Musing Mondays this week!!  Here are rules that we have to and/or want to play:
Okay… so what’s going to happen is this: I’m going to ask a question today — as I always do for Musing Mondays — and the first commenter is going to answer my question on their blog (or in my comments section). BUT…

That first commenter also needs to ask a question (a different question) for commenter #2 to answer. So, commenter #2 (to Should Be Reading) has to go to commenter #1′s MM post and answer their question… plus pose a question of their own for commenter #3 to answer! And, so on.
Each participant to MM today needs to ask their own question for the next person to answer, in addition to answering the previous person’s question.

Today's Topic:
What element, if a book has it, will make you almost always read that book (and name a book –or books– that contain it)! ((for example: romantic reunions))
My Answer:
A good suspense, and the authors that I like and will read any and all of their books.  The type of book that I love is the kind that grab you from the start, have short chapters (what I call just one more chapter and find myself 10 chapters later), like when the main characters are assigned one chapter, next chapter containing another character and so forth and keeps changing.  This is another great element because, again, I have to keep reading to find out where I was left hanging.  I am reading a book for review and it has all of this and having a hard time putting it down.  Its Buying Time by
Pamela Samuels-Young.
My Question:
Do you like short or long detailed reviews?
My Answer:
I prefer reading short detailed reviews.  I just want to get the bottom line as if I should put it on my list.  Did the reviewer like it, why or why not.  Were the characters brought to life.  Did it hold your interest, etc etc.  Since finding this world of reviewing/blogging, my tbr bucket list is huge.  And since there are so many books and reviews, I just want to know if I might be interestsed in it and add to my ever growing list.
Caite's Question:
Do you belong to an online book site, like Library Thing, Shelfari and Goodreads and if so why? For you own record keeping and organization or primarily for the social aspects, posting, book reviews and such?

My Answer:
I belong to all three GR, LT, and Shelfari for many reasons. For posting reviews, see what others think about the same books I have read, entering early reviewers contests and try lol to becoming more organized with my piles of books, not there yet but am adding little by little.

This EBook was downloaded to my Sony Ereader this week. At the request of the author as a favor, he asked that I read this pending digital mini, and give my honest opinion as a reader and consumer, before he self submits it to an indie online publishing site.

More Awards !!!!! (2 of 2)

Photobucket
Recently it has been hot and humid in my neck of the woods....but....NO....that's not the reason.  I could even say it is a hot flash...but....NO...not that either.  Its that special feeling you get...warm all over....when someone gives you a great big hug!!!  Well....Vicki from Reading At The Beach just gave me a huge hug in the form of an award.  If you follow this blog, you know what I think about Vicki.  She was one of the first bloggers I reached out to for help when I found this wonderful world of book blogging.  I had never seen the word meme, didn't even know what it was, but Vicki was always there to answer all my questions, even to this day.  I am honored that I can call her "Friend".  If you haven't visited, you don't know what you are missing.  Her reviews are professional,  her postings interesting and her pictures absolutely beautiful.  Take a walk over to her place and say hi!!  This is the award she kindly passed to me:

Now for the criteria:
Rules:

Pass this on to five great blog neighbors
I define a great blog neighbor as someone that consistently comments on your posts and responds to questions or comments that you have.
This is the hardest part for me, since there are soooo many people that are deserving of this award.  I have been lucky to have received this award in the past and have passed it on so am going to pass it on to 5 more of my neighbors (in no particular order):
PK Reeves from Aisle B
Darlyn from darlyn & books

And this morning, what a great way to wake up, I was presented with this award:
Photobucket
Dizzy C from DizzyC's Little Book Blog, which is a great blog I just found from the Friday Blog Hop, was gracious to pass this on.  I received this award a couple of days ago so I won't bore everyone again.   It amazes me that no matter how many I get,  I get that warm and fuzzy feeling with each one.  What a fantastic feeling knowing that someone really likes my blog.  So thank you Dizzy C.  And if you haven't visited her, you really should.  She has a wonderful blog!!

Slapdash Sunday Topic: Review Requests ? (1 of 2)

SUNDAY

Question for those that use/have a blogspot address:
Is anyone having trouble today adding pictures to their posts or is it my computer?

Photobucket
Hosted by Kayla at The Eclectic Element
Slapdash Sunday is a day for your proverbial week 'leftovers.' Is there something you wanted to say, but just forgot? Is there something you want to write about, but isn't worth a whole page? Do you have a random thought, funny or otherwise that needs to be written down?
That is what Slapdash Sunday is for!
Photobucket
The other day I added and catalogued the newest book I received to be reviewed.  As I looked at my pile, I started thinking, which is usually dangerous (lol) for me, and thought that the questions I had would be a good topic for today.
Do you get a lot of requests?  Or do you seek out books to review?  Do you think that because of this new phenomenon of social media outlets and book blogging/reviewing sites, that you are getting more requests from publishers, authors and agents?  Are there more requests this year than in the past?
What are your thoughts and/or opinions on this topic....would love to hear.  Lets have a Slapdash Discussion!!
