Halloween Special "God's Eye" by A.J. Scudiere

I know you are probably wondering why I have an image of Halloween on my blog today...right?   Well...it's almost that time again, but the real reason why, is that since Halloween is right around the corner, A.J. Scudiere's publisher, Griffyn Ink Publishing, is giving everyone a treat, and I didn't want you to miss out on it!!!

Back in July A. J. Scudiere had stopped by to tell us about her book God's Eye.  You can see that visit here.

And her publisher is doing a killer deal for Halloween - from 10/24 to 10/31, you can download the eBook version of God's Eye for only $2.99!

ABOUT THE BOOK
(From the back cover)

A demon . . .

Every soul he claims is another chance to advance.
Until he can walk among us, look like us, make us believe in him.  The only thing holding him back is . . .

An angel. . .

The rules of the realm bind him from fighting
on the demon’s terms.  But this is his chance
to steal something away from the demon,
to steal the thing the demon wants most . . .

A woman who must choose . . .

A woman who has been chosen.
Katharine is suddenly a pawn in a game
where the rules and the stakes are beyond her comprehension.
She must take a side even though she can’t tell angel from demon.
And in the end, they will all be judged.

God’s Eye

Thank You..Update

I want to thank everyone who said prayers for my husband's surgery to be successful.  It was!!!  The doctor told me that the surgery went well and he did fine.  Our son and I were able to see him in recovery and he was alert, talking, cracking jokes and complaining that he was hungry.  Needless to say, however, he was in a lot of pain.

He was then taken to ICU.  We now have to wait to see, that since the pressure is no longer on his brain, that he will get back the full use of the left side of his body.

Again, I want to thank everyone for their prayers. comforting words, kindness, and caring.  It has meant so much to me and is greatly appreciated.  This, I can honestly say, has been the scariest time in my life.

Read Pink

PENGUIN GROUP (USA) IS IN THE PINK FOR
BREAST CANCER AWARENESS
It’s time to think pink to shrink cancer

What’s black and white and pink all over? The initiative by the Penguin Group (USA) called Read Pink™ in honor of Breast Cancer Awareness Month. This literary embrace of a life-saving cause last year resulted in nearly 400,000 best-selling romances shipped with Read Pink seals and information about the charity it supports – the Breast Cancer Research Foundation®. In 2010 and 2011, some 12,000 floor displays also carried the Read Pink message. The result raised awareness for BCRF, the only cancer organization to receive A+ from the Institute for Philanthropy.

“We are delighted to be able to continue this initiative in support of The Breast Cancer Research Foundation for a second time.  We hope that awareness for the Foundation’s work will only grow by bringing more attention to this important cause,” said Leslie Gelbman, President of Mass Market Publishing, Penguin Group (USA). To mark the occasion, Penguin Group (USA) is again making a $25,000 donation to The Breast Cancer Research Foundation.

“The Breast Cancer Research Foundation is very grateful to be part of Penguin’s Read Pink program again this year,” said Myra J. Biblowit, President, The Breast Cancer Research Foundation.  “This visible initiative will certainly raise awareness about BCRF.”

The donation provides vital funds to support the mission of The Breast Cancer Research Foundation.   As Dr. Laura J. Essermandirector of the Carole Franc Buck Breast Cancer Center at the University of California at San Francisco said,. “[BCRF] awards support leaders in translational science and assume that they will be able to best dispense the funds. This is invaluable. Most grants require a year’s lead time before ideas can be funded. The BCRF funds allow you to plan ideas a few months ahead, and are flexible in support. The awards also come with the promise of continuity to explore new ideas as they arise. I also really appreciate the annual awards ceremony and the expression of thanks to the scientists. We don’t often get that and it really is rewarding and inspiring to see that people appreciate us, even if we don’t come up with all of the answers. It is an expression of thanks for the efforts we put forward to try to find answers.”

The novels chosen for Read Pink 2011 are eight bestselling mass market titles by some of Penguin Group (USA)’s most beloved female authors. Included this year are Nora Roberts, Catherine Anderson, Christina Dodd, Jillian Hunter, Lynn Kurland, Amanda Quick, Bertrice Small and Lauren Willig.  More than 300,000 copies of the special editions will be printed featuring Read Pink seals on the covers.  In addition, Penguin Group (USA) is including information in the back of each book in an effort to make readers aware of The Breast Cancer Research Foundation and encourage them to become actively involved in supporting the organization.

For more details about the Read Pink initiative and to view a complete list of the participating retail outlets, please visit www.penguin.com/readpink.

About The Breast Cancer Research Foundation®
The Breast Cancer Research Foundation® was founded in 1993 by Evelyn H. Lauder as an independent, not-for-profit organization dedicated to funding innovative clinical and translational research. In October 2011, BCRF will award $36.5 million to 186 scientists across the United States, Canada, Latin America, Europe, the Middle East, Australia and China. Currently, more than 90 cents of every dollar donated is directed to breast cancer research and awareness programs. With exceptionally low administrative costs, BCRF continues to be one of the most efficient organizations in the country. BCRF has received an“A+” from The American Institute of Philanthropy.  For more information about BCRF, visit www.bcrfcure.org.

Blog Hiatus Again

Dear Friends and Blogging Buddies:

Just when I thought I was back, I have to take another hiatus.

If I was sitting where you are and reading this, I would wonder if it was legit and true.  Or is this person (meaning me) making all this up?  How could all this be happening?  Just losing my Mom and now this.  The answer is, it is true and I only wish it was a bad dream.

I feel like I am a character in a novel except I'm not.  I wish I could put this story aside in the DNF pile or even turn to the last page to see how the ending turns out.

I am writing this to let you know the situation for 3 reasons.  One, why once again, I won't be participating in the daily memes that I enjoy and visiting blogs to see what everyone else has written or received, such as Mailbox Monday.  I will be, however, scheduling some posts to be published ahead of time because I have made commitments for Guest Author showcases and giveaways.  The second is that I may not be responding to emails because I will be away from my computer for lengthy periods of time. The third, and most important, is I ask for a favor and that is, if you believe in prayer, I ask that you pray that on Wednesday my husband's surgery is successful.

This past Tuesday, it was determined that my husband had a significant brain bleed and is exhibiting stroke like symptoms.  Due to the fact that he has aspirin in his system, but is stable, surgery was postponed until Wednesday.  After observing him in the hospital for 2 days, they felt he was stable enough to send home for me to watch him for any changes in signs and/or symptoms. If so, then surgery will be immediate.  Wednesday he will have a craniotomy (a portion of the skull will be removed to remove the large area of blood pressing on his brain). We are hoping that because of his age, 56, that he will get back the residual symptoms he is now showing and that no more damage is caused.  Needless to say we are all frightened but we all believe in the power of God and prayer.  So I ask, if you believe too, please keep him in your prayers for a positive and successful outcome.  I will try to update you towards the end of the week.

911 Anniversary

It was 10 years ago today, the world we knew changed.  I remember it was a glorious beautiful day.  My oldest son, Paul, was at college.  My youngest son, Mark, was in HS.  My husband at work.  My plans for the day was to start on another room for fall cleaning, after I finished my coffee while I sat at the computer in our family room, reading my email and watching the Today show.  And then it happened.  I called my son at college and told him to turn on the TV and to stay in his dorm, not to move.  The second tower was hit.  I kept trying to reach my husband with no luck.  That's when I started to panic as he works for a company that has government ties.  I remember not knowing if I should go pick up my youngest son but I remember that I felt that I couldn't move from the TV and then the Pentagon was hit.  My son at college called me with extreme terror in his voice, asking me what was happening, what should he do, what was going to happen, what did this mean?  All questions I had no answers for and I still couldn't reach my husband.  I told Paul to stay in his dorm as I felt it was the safest place and I would let him know if we would be coming to get him.  Then it was the heroes in Shanksville Pennsylvania.

When my youngest son walked through the door he was physically shaken and pale.  The fear written on his face.  We just sat on the couch with my arms around him and watched the images on TV.  After hours of trying to  reach my husband, he called, relief, he was ok.  However, some of his coworkers that he knew, were on the first plane that hit the towers.

I remember, for days, I hardly left the couch, watching the TV trying to process what had happened, how could this happen, what this meant, what those families were going through.  Those days following are a blur.    Today, 10 years later, it is as vivid in my mind as it was that beautiful day in 2011.  But today is in remembrance of those who lost their lives, and their families, because of a senseless act of hate of innocent people

I think we were all changed by that horrific day.   We didn't know each other 10 years ago and I would like to know where you were, what you were doing, what you felt, your thoughts, etc., etc.,  Today is for those lost, those that remember, those that mourn, today is for all Americans.  Please feel free to leave your feelings, thoughts, prayers and comments.

Irene Update

Hi everyone.  Just wanted to give you an update.  It's approximately 7:45am and we are anxiously awaiting for what Irene has in store for us.  Right now as I watch CNN, I am concerned about my family and friends in the Philly area where it seems to be doing it's damage, then onto CT where my other son is.  We are supposed to get the brunt of it later this afternoon.  But if what is happening outside is any indication, we are in for a wild ride.  The winds are already very gusty and picking up with heavy down pours.  We are quite concerned about flooding, loss of electricity and house damage but have prepared as much as we can and now we wait, which is always the hardest part.  For those in Irene's path, stay safe.  And those who aren't, please say a prayer for those who are.  Will be online as soon as I can.

sarah@mediamuscle.com

With several bestsellers under her belt and over a million copies of her books sold to an ever growing audience, Elin Hilderbrand has established herself as the go-to writer for expertly plotted, gorgeous summer novels. However, don’t be mistaken: Hilderbrand may write against the backdrop of a blistering Nantucket summer, but her books are anything but fluff. She brings complicated, fully realized women to life, making each book moving and full of dramatic truths, while also presenting each as a scorching page-turner. Never has that been more evident than in SILVER GIRL (Reagan Arthur Books / Little, Brown 6/21/11), Hilderbrand’s highly anticipated new novel.

Meet Meredith Delinn, a woman whose husband has cheated rich investors out of billions of dollars and, in the process, humiliated Meredith so fully that she’s lost everything: her friends, her homes—even contact with her beloved sons. More down-and-out than she ever thought possible, Meredith reaches out to the only person she has left: her oldest friend, Constance Flute. Despite a painful rift between the women, Constance, who is herself mourning the loss of her adored husband, can’t turn her back on Meredith and takes her to Nantucket to hide—and to heal. When it seems as if the present is too difficult to endure, Constance and Meredith revisit their shared history. A surprise visit from Toby, Constance’s brother and Meredith’s high school sweetheart, forces Meredith to confront both her present and her former self, and decide who it is she will become in the aftermath of her personal tragedy. Amid the salty sea air and sandy dunes, both women must learn how to forgive each other, and themselves. In SILVER GIRL, Hilderbrand has added depth and humanity to a character we thought we already knew, and has crafted a suspenseful story of friendship, love, and the power of forgiveness.

Elin Hilderbrand lives on Nantucket with her husband and their three children. She grew up in Collegeville, Pennsylvania, and is an enthusiastic Philadelphia Eagles fan. She has traveled extensively through six continents but loves no place better than Nantucket, where she enjoys hogging, cooking, and watching her sons play Little League Baseball. Hilderbrand is a graduate of Johns Hopkins university and the graduate fiction workshop at the University of Iowa.

I'm Still Here

Checking In

HI EVERYONE!!!!

No, I haven't checked out, ran away, been abducted by aliens, kidnapped, gone on vacation (though that would be nice) or anything else that has kept me away from blogging except for real life.  I have missed every single one of you!!!

I am just being pulled in many different directions at the present time and family always take priority over hobby and fun.  My Mom was finally discharged from the hospital but is in a very weakened and compromised condition.  I have had to make some very hard and emotional decisions over the past few weeks and between that and going back and forth between the hospital, nursing home, and assisted living facility for my sister, I am just emotionally and physically drained.

I haven't picked up a book in weeks, not that I haven't tried, but when I do, I am asleep before getting the book opened.  I hope you will understand that this week's Sunday's Shining Star will be on vacation as I haven't even had time to draft up the post.

However,  there is some good news!!!  Something that I am soooooo excited about and will be announcing over the coming weeks......so stay tuned!!!!!

I hope to be back to normal soon....ok you can stop laughing now for those who are thinking "was she ever normal"  I won't name names but Lori comes to mind lol.

Happy Reading!!!!!

FYI Summer Reading

Did Spring bypass you where you live?  I know here in New England it did.  Summer has arrived!!!!  That means it is time to gear up and get our pile of books ready for the beach or by the pool.   If you follow my blog, you know I am a HUGE fan of Vincent Zandri, when he hooked me with Moonlight Falls back in 2010.  So I thought I would share some news with you, and at this price, you can't go wrong for a perfect summer read.  His novel, The Innocent (see my review here), is now only $0.99 on Amazon.  But, I am warning you, make sure you apply the sunscreen, because you will become so engrossed that you will forget to turn over.  Trust me, it happened to me when I read his novel, Concrete Pearl, while on vacation.

Happy Summer Reading!!!!!

—Library Journal (starred review)

“Stevens’s impressive debut, a thriller set on Vancouver Island, pulsates with suspense that gets a power boost from the jaw-dropping but credible closing twist.”

STILL MISSING
A Novel
By Chevy Stevens
A missing young woman, a frightening abductor, a sealed-up remote cabin, and an honest, frank voice trying to sort out a situation that would destroy anyone: Chevy Stevens’ STILL MISSING is a page turner in the truest sense of the word. STILL MISSING (St. Martin’s Press; Paperback May 24, 2011) is that rare debut find—a shocking, visceral, brutal and beautifully crafted novel.
On the day she was abducted, Annie O’Sullivan, a thirty-two year old realtor, had three goals—sell a house, forget about a recent argument with her mother, and be on time for dinner with her ever-patient boyfriend. The open house she hosts is slow, but when her last visitor pulls up in a van as she's about to leave, Annie thinks it just might be her lucky day after all. She couldn’t be further from the truth.
Interwoven with the story of the year Annie spent as the captive of psychopath in a remote mountain cabin, which unfolds through sessions with her psychiatrist, is a second narrative recounting events following her escape. This includes her struggle to piece her shattered life back together as well as the ongoing police investigation into the identity of her captor. Through this, Annie and the reader, discover that the truth doesn’t always set you free.

CHEVY STEVENS grew up on a ranch on Vancouver Island and still calls the island home. For most of her adult life she worked in sales, first as a rep for a giftware company and then as a realtor. STILL MISSING is her first novel.

You're Invited

From Sarah at The Book Trib....
I am SO excited about our upcoming book party on BookTrib on 4/26 with Deanna Fei, author of the critically-acclaimed novel A THREAD OF SKY. If you liked Song of the Silk Road, you’ll love A THREAD OF SKY. It truly is an amazing book and Deanna is incredibly talented. I’d love for you and your readers to be a part of it! The details are below.

A THREAD OF SKY By Deanna Fei

A New York Times Editors’ Choice
An Indie Next Notable Book
Now in Paperback

“Irene scurried into the cave. A thread of sky—she mouthed it to herself. Light radiating through a pinhole in the cave ceiling. She pictured an undulating line, alive and fine against the dark. The kind of thing you couldn’t help but reach for, knowing there was nothing to grasp.”

As Irene Shen’s husband of thirty years was leaving her, she shut the door behind him and half-jokingly said, “Good riddance,” to the collective eye-rolling of her three daughters. But when he dies suddenly in an accident shortly thereafter, Irene’s family falls apart. Her oldest daughter Nora withdraws to her high-powered Wall Street job and troubled relationship; her strong-willed middle child Kay heads to China to discover her family’s heritage and learn the language; and the youngest, Sophie, a sensitive art student, is miserably trapped at home until college starts. Thus begins Deanna Fei’s stunning debut novel A THREAD OF SKY (Penguin Books; Paperback March 29, 2011; $15.00).

With her family in pieces, Irene formulates a plan to bring them back together: she starts organizing a whirlwind tour of mainland China for her three daughters, her distant poet sister, and her formidable eighty-year-old mother whom she hasn’t seen in years. As the three generations of women tour China, from beautiful temples and remote sections of the Great Wall to the glitzy bars and shops in downtown Shanghai, each woman begins to uncover secrets great and small. And as they continue on their travels across the country, they slowly find their way toward a new understanding of themselves and each other.

Partly inspired by Deanna Fei’s own travels through China with her grandmother, mother, and sisters, A THREAD OF SKY is a beautifully written and deeply haunting story about love and sacrifice, history and memory, sisterhood and motherhood, and the connections that endure.

About the Author:
Deanna Fei was born in Flushing, New York, and has lived in Beijing and Shanghai, China. A graduate of Amherst College and the Iowa Writers’ Workshop, she has received a Fulbright grant and a New York Foundation for the Arts fellowship. She currently lives in Brooklyn.

A Bit Upset and Losing Patience

I apologize for the way my blog looks today.  I upload all of my images to photobucket and they were supposedly doing maintenance today and be up and running late this afternoon.

I was scheduled to have a special author showcased today, however, I do not think it is fair to him to not have all the images related to his book not be presented in the way they so rightly deserve to be shown.  I am hoping that by tomorrow, that photobucket will fix this problem and we can get on with blogging.

A huge apology to the author and his publisher.!!!!!
