This week's question::
I am paraphrasing from a friend’s Facebook wall her question:
“How would a teen-age boy who is going to work with his hands ever use Literature of England in his work?”
The age-old “How am I going to use this in real life?” question. How would you answer it?
My answer:
Wow....This is a hard one that really has me on the fence. My family and I have had discussions similar to this.
In general, one would hope that maybe later on down the road, that one of these "students" would develop a love for books and reading. And how would this help? It could be an opening into conversations or to become engaged in conversations for times when being newly introduced to people.
But then on the other hand, and this is my opinion only, with the cost of higher education and text books, I feel that a college student should only take courses that are mandatory for his/her major. All the electives are just money making for the colleges and a waste of time. These kids come out of school with exorbitant school loans and no jobs available. What does a finance major need with ceramics? Or an engineering major need with, as stated Literature of England?
Having had 2 sons that recently graduated from college, as a mother, I read to them when they were younger, bought them books, took them to the library, etc, etc, so they have the basis. Now it is up to them what they choose to do with it.

From Lori's site:
It struck me recently how much time I spend on this computer every day, blogging, chatting or playing games on Facebook, emailing friends and relatives, making cards and calendars, etc. etc. etc.
We depend on each other for book reviews, giveaways, encouragement, friendship, but how well do we really know each other?
So that is what this meme is all about, getting to know each other.
WEEK 23 QUESTIONS
1. What was the first job your ever had?
Back in the day, lol, I was called a Nurse's Aide and I started working while in HS
2. What was the worst job you ever had?
I actually had 2 degrees, RN and secretarial. I worked for a surgeon as an assistant/plus doing office type work. Lasted one week when I realized part of the job description was that I couldn't leave the office until he did because I had to shut off the lights as he left each room. Creepy!!!!!!!!!
3. What is the best job you ever had?
My last job. My boys were young and I could make my own hours. I couldn't work
the floors but needed to have an active license and use the knowledge that I had. Almost like a QA of medical records.

The Booking Through Thursday question is a tough one. As a teacher, I want to encourage reading at a young age, as you did with your sons (and hooray for all of you by the way!). College/university isn't all about preparing for your career, though a majority of your courses should be at least relevant to your top job choices. In hindsight, college is all about learning how to learn--how to think critically, problem solve, work collaboratively, and get the most out of your education. I think every college student should take at least 1 literature survey course to dabble in a bit of everything, then at least they develop a background knowledge. Sorry to ramble but I just had to comment on this question :)
The question was asked by a mom of a high schooler, but I very much agree with Teacher/Learner above. Reading affects so much how we think and evaluate and broadens our horizons.
The Blogging Through Thursday question is hard. With a daughter in College now, I don't understand a lot of the courses she is taking, but she wants to be a teacher and needs to be well versed in a lot of subjects, but this semester she is taking Social Dance,"Mom, I needs a fun class", but it costs a lot and she is also taking French, when she already has met the 2nd language requirement by taking 3 plus years of Spanish in High School and that class is the most expensive of any class she is taking and plans to take French 2 next semester. I know the money shouldn't matter, I want her to get a great education but I question her choices and those of her advisor.
Sorry, I babbled too!!
Great answer..
Here is my BTT: Real Life post!
I like a well rounded curriculum for college students. First of all, not all of them have been exposed to a lot of different things and second of all, most of them change their major before it's all over with.
I didn't play either meme today. I really didn't have an answer for BTT, and I never worked away from home, I became a mother when I was 18, and was a stay at home mom all my life. We lived on a farm, so I also had farm chores each day, so I lead a very boring life.
Hmmm, coming from a former Reading Teacher, I have been asked this question so many times. I have the standard answers but really if he is working with his hands, why not tell him it would be good to have some of those big heavy English lit books around to use as weights to hold things down or to prop things up :)
